Bhopal. Toronto. Forests, trees, flowers, an eye movement, a shadow is caught in the obstruction of light.

I read, write, shoot, theorise, try to sketch, paint UV filters with glass paints, replace my mirrorless camera with a handycam for a while; get pictures and put it all together. Image-making, sound-listening, filmmaking.

A work in progress

In Canada, I found myself filling the gaps of silences with the reminiscent noise from India.

This is a documented video essay - of how language feels when heard and processed in the quiet of Western wilderness and how it gets under the skin of the listener when heard in the characteristic noise of Indian cities. And historical sites. And forests. And rivers.

Embodying the emergence in the slowness of the thunder as lightening steals the show.

En route completion..a work in progress.

Today I experienced something that I hope to understand in a few days...

Latest work: Nagari short film competition 2023
Charles Correa Foundation

This film, set in the heart of India, Bhopal, traces the waste that flows from demolition sites in a fast growing city. The Construction and Demolition waste is a major environmental hazard. The recycling plants installed by the government are only able to address 1% of the total waste generated in the country. This film showcases everyday practices of people residing in an informal settlement in the city, called Mandwa. The film beautifully captures how the residents reuse C&D waste to build their homes, one brick and a few tiles at a time.

on films, for films

We have had innovative work arise from digital as well as analog, and here we stand at the furthest juncture humans have ever found themselves in, trying to make sense of Newton’s laws that refuse to apply the moment we take our feet off the ground and Einstein's theories that only make sense while up in the air. Quite like analog and digital, the dialectics we have been dealing with demand a unique synthesis for the 21st century.

Bilkisganj. 5 am. Almost as many stars as Toronto on a week night. 30 kms from Bhopal, my hometown.

It rained once but we saved the camera with a raincoat. The fire required, however, water to boil at 700 degrees We were not able to arrange that. Another morning. A crab at the river caught the camera person's foot.

This video essay is made with a Sony A6300 fitted with a UV Filter on a 30mm lens, that was painted with glass colours.
